Zack25: DUNNO, WASTING TIME I GUESS

MrRightNow: NO WORK TODAY?

Zack25: HOME SICK ;)

MrRightNow: ME TOO.

Zack25: BEEN ON LONG

MrRightNow: LONG ENOUGH!

Zack25: LONG ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER LOL

MrRightNow: RIGHT.

A pause as both, Michael imagined, plotted their next step. Michael took the lead.

MrRightNow: WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Zack25: GOOD QUESTION

Zack25: YOU

Zack25: ASL

“27 M EAST VILL,” Michael lied.

“30 UWS HERE,” Zack25 typed.

“HORNY HERE,” Michael typed back, dropping punctuation and pretense in one fell swoop.

“WELL HELLO HORNY,” Zack wrote.

“CAM2CAM?” Michael asked, getting to the point, praying that Zack25 wasn’t really a Tony63 – bald, sweating, sitting in his wood-paneled basement under the glow of a single bare light bulb while his wife mopped the floor upstairs.

“BUY ME A DRINK FIRST,” Zack replied.

Michael snickered at Zack’s wit, a wit that was atypical in the present environment. “HA HA,” he typed, unable and mostly unwilling to put too much energy into small talk at this point. He clicked the webcam icon next to Zack’s photo.

CALL REQUESTED, WAITING FOR REPLY FROM ZACK25, a new window read as a Mars symbol began spinning slowly clockwise in a way that resonated with Michael’s state of mind.

“WHOA NELLY!” Zack wrote, evidently deciding that punctuation was now warranted. “NOT MUCH 4 4PLAY HUH”.

Michael groaned. No, actually, he thought to himself, I’m not.

Silence on the screen.

In spite of his impatience, Michael felt the urge to come up with something witty – at the very least, to take advantage of finally meeting someone younger than his father and without a harness or other accoutrements – but couldn’t summon the requisite energy. Why not save yourself a headache and just jerk off to a movie, he chided himself, eyeing the video he’d illegally downloaded an hour ago as a back-up plan. Or better yet, don’t jerk off at all. Take a walk. Bake a pie. Something, anything.

“OR CONVERSATION FOR THAT MATTER,” Zack tried again.

“SORRY, GUESS NOT,” Michael wrote. “MAYBE NEXT TIME.” He clicked onto the video, watching as two beefy construction workers kissed awkwardly in a garage. Or maybe they were mechanics.

“WAIT”. Zack again. “SORRY JUST PLAYIN @ WITH U”.

Michael sighed. “SORRY, JUST IN A CRAP MOOD,” he typed.

“2 CRAP 2 STILL HAVE SOME FUN,” Zack asked.

Michael pondered the question as Mechanic #1 inhaled Mechanic #2’s power drill. A faint stir emanated from his briefs. Mechanic #2 urged #1 to take it deeper, deeper, aw yeah deeper. Michael paused the video, freezing Mechanic #2’s face in mid-command, his twisted features robbing him of any appeal.

“SURE,” Michael typed. “WHY NOT?”

Michael lifted the hot laptop off of his thighs and placed it on the table, facing him. Eyeing his pale reflection in the video screen, he propped the computer up onto the answering machine until the camera captured him at a more reasonable angle.

“GREAT,” wrote Zack. “INVITE ME AGAIN. NO MICROPHONE THO.”

“K,” Michael wrote back.

Cocking his head to one side, Michael cheated away from the camera. He paused, contemplating his somewhat haggard looking countenance, then cheated in the other direction. He ran a hand through his mussed hair, shaping it into something other than three days’ worth of bedhead.
